Get the Right FIT for Your Home or Business

What is the Feed-In Tariff (FIT)?

The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has launched its Feed-In-Tariff (FIT) Program designed to encourage and reward Ontario residents and businesses for generating renewable energy through the installation of rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Solar Systems.

The FIT Program (also called MicroFIT small scale projects for homes, farms and small businesses) will pay you a set rate for each kilowatt hour your home or business generates. The generous rate paid to you will enable you to recover the cost of installing your PV Solar System and make a handsome profit over time.

Get FIT:

Participants in the Feed-In Tariff program receive:

  • A 20 year contract that pays you for electricity you generate
  • A fixed price of 80.2¢ (<10kW) or 71.3¢ (10kW - 250kW) per kilowatt hour generated for the full term of your contract
  •  Solsmart handles the application process, utility connection, design, installation, inspection and commissioning of the solar system.

How long does it take?

MicroFIT (1kW – 10kW)

A typical microFIT project takes 3-5 months from start to finish.

  • The initial OPA approval takes 30-90 days
  • Installation usually takes less than one week
  • Inspection and utility meter installation takes 5-30 days
  • microFIT contract finalization takes 30 business days

FIT (10kW – 250kW)

A typical FIT project can take 6 to 9 months due to more complex utility connection and regulatory requirements.  Solsmart offers turnkey systems, design, consulting and installation sub-contracting for FIT projects. Contact us today at 416-229-2200 for more details.

How Do I Get Paid?

You will receive contract payments from your local distribution company for the electricity produced from your solar system. Your local distribution company makes these payments on behalf of the OPA. These payments will be made to you according to the regular billing cycle.

What is Domestic Content?

Our solar systems are fully compliant with OPA (Ontario Power Authority) domestic content requirements. Currently, MicroFIT (<10kW) systems require a minimum of 40% provincial content while FIT projects (>10kW) require 50% domestic content. Solsmart achieves content levels through labour, electrical balance of system and Ontario made racking and inverters. When you purchase a solar system from Solsmart, we deliver all required documentation and photographs to finalize the OPA microFIT or FIT contract. Domestic content requirements ensure the continued evolution of manufacturing and development in Ontario!
